A poll: ultimate soap fighting.
Yes, these are the ridiculous things I think about early in the morning*.
Personally, I’d probably go with Christian and Olli, though Christian’s recent health problems might prevent him being a really effective bruiser. And we shouldn’t count out Otalia, because Olivia is fierce.
*Obligatory srs bzness disclaimer: This is a joke and is not meant to imply in any way, shape or form that same sex soap couples need to spar for people’s enjoyment like gladiators in the Coliseum.

Soap Opera Weekly: Blogging With Mala
I think I spent the entire weekend in a Kish-induced haze — leading me to conclude something that’s probably not all that shocking: OLTL’s Kyle Lewis represents daytime’s new generation of gay characters. He’s just your average joe — with a taste for blackmail and a guy named Fish — soap character.
The closest we’ve come before this is probably GH: NIGHT SHIFT’s Kyle (Adam Grimes), who was a doctor with the same problems as anybody else in the hospital. There was no issue of him coming out of or going into any closets. He was a friend, a brother, a dedicated physician, and a guy who fell in love with one of his patients. AMC’s Lena Kundera (Olga Sosnovska), Bianca’s first serious girlfriend after Sarah, was another character whose sexuality was just a part of her and not a platform for anything. These were just people doing what people do on a soap. I had initially hoped that Y&R’s Adam would hold this distinction as well … turning out to be a bisexual villain, but the show back-peddled from that story so fast that I’m surprised they didn’t trip over something. Adam manipulated another guy — NAKED — but, hey, he’s not into boys that way. Riiiight.
Heck, the only bisexual characters on daytime right now are GL’s Natalia and Olivia, neither of whom negate their past relationships with men and their perhaps ongoingattraction to men (hi, Josh!) just because they love each other. Olivia’s very much still Olivia: the broken, dysfunctional woman who will turn to anyone for just a smidge of validation. But the character’s been on a ten year path, and it’s a little bit of a different story than bringing on a brand-new LGBT character.
OLTL’s Kyle is gay from the get-go…in the most shrug-worthy, blasé of ways. His sexuality is as much a footnote to him as it is to hetero characters like Rex or Blair. He never really announced it to anyone, and that’s where the writers were brilliant. Kyle turned down Gigi’s advances when she tried to get info out of him by just saying she didn’t have anything he wants. And Roxy figured out he was gay mostly by context and things unspoken (catching a guy mooning over a photo will do that). And Kyle’s not sanitized, sainted and beloved. He’s no one’s poster child. AMC’s Bianca, by virtue of being the legendary Erica Kane’s daughter and the trailblazer, became all of the above. They couldn’t really let her be a bitch or, as Roxy might say, “let her freak flag fly.” Lest she undo the whole process of introducing daytime to a core gay character. And Binks learned the hard way during Eden Riegel’s 2008-09 return that going from saint to sinner wouldn’t fly with viewers. The show tried, too late, to turn PV’s most benevolent lesbian into someone who might have a secret baby with her brother-in-law. Fans weren’t havin’ it. Kyle, by virtue of starting out a blackmailer and crazy Rebecca’s baby brother, has no pedestal to plummet from.
And he’s found a perfectly imperfect match in terminally nice Oliver, who’s currently doing something not-so nice by dating Layla and breaking poor Kyle’s heart. Yes, Fish is grappling with his orientation and there will be a coming out element to this story, but I really think (okay, hope) it’s not going to be an after-school special. Because these are just guys trying to live their lives. And all my Kyle praise is not meant to diminish Fish in the least. It’s just that Oliver’s journey is different; he still has to get to the place where Kyle already is…and, believe me, I can’t wait till he gets there!

What would happen if they kissed?
After ruminating on One Life to Live’s Kyle and Fish all weekend, I was inspired to hit YouTube to look up all of daytime’s LGBT first liplocks*. I think I got ‘em all, but feel free to comment and tell me what else to look for.
Daytime’s first same-sex kiss, that of AMC’s Bianca and Lena in 2003
(Since the smooch above, Bianca has kissed Maggie and that one random girl on New Year’s Eve, and had makeout sessions with wife, Reese.)
Four years later, ATWT’s Noah and Luke
2008, GH: Night Shift, Kyle and Eric: (starts around minute 3:51)
2009, GL’s Olivia plants one on Natalia
And a bonus…
Here’s Christian and Olli’s first kiss, from the German soap opera Verbotene Liebe.
As for answering the question in my subject line: What would happen if they kissed? Well, there has been no noticeable furthering of the moral decay of society. The streets are not overflowing with panic. Children are not suddenly waking up gay because they saw it on the TV. Basically, despite any and all pearl-clutching, what has happened is that daytime TV has started actually reflecting its audience and telling stories about people who, previously, had been marginalized or ignored entirely.
Yay!
*As opposed to cut-aways and creative editing, like in the cases of Y&R’s Rafe/Adam, Passions‘ Vincent/Chad, etc. I also can’t remember if OLTL’s Daniel and Mark or Passions‘ Rae and Simone ever had implied kisses and YouTube is short on clips of those stories.

Soap Opera Weekly: Blogging With Mala
Look, it’s a blog entry NOT about GUIDING LIGHT! (At least to start off with.) Instead, I’m going to lead with ONE LIFE TO LIVE and ALL MY CHILDREN, both of which I’ve started catching up on.
I tuned in to AMC for Jake and Amanda’s wedding, which was an adorable laugh-fest, and the birth of Amanda’s son, which was a six-hanky sobfest. That baby was so cute, so tiny and sleepy, and Chrishell Stause knocked the goodbye scenes with him out of the park. I also really adore her chemistry with Ricky Paull Goldin. This is one of those cases where an actor is brought on for one thing but takes off in a completely different way. Goldin came on with Beth Ehlers from That Show I’m Not Mentioning Until Later, ostensibly to try and recapture their Gus/Harley couple spark, but it’s Jake and Amanda that really caught fire. They’re funny and romantic — and Jake totally rocked those orange-pink scrubs!
Less pleasing to the eye was Dorian’s meltdown at Markko’s graduation party on OLTL. I was horrified, and if you know me and my hot buttons, I think you know exactly why. So, getting dumped and drunk turns Dorian Lord into an over-privileged bigot? Come on. Sure, I remember it being pretty painful when Carlotta was her maid and then gradually shifted over to the Angel Square storyline, but was it anywhere near this outwardly offensive? Thinking Markko’s parents were the help?! The way she belittled Shaun and his “little friend” and then talked down to Moe and Noelle?! I wanted to hide under my desk. Sure, Dorian’s stuck-up but her daughters Adrianna and Langston are both half-Latin, and I just think that was a poor, poor direction for the writers to take her. I actually cheered Langston yelling at her and shoving her in the pool.
On the bright side for OLTL, I got up to speed on the Kyle/Fish storyline this weekend (what there is of it) and can safely say that if handled correctly, it has potential! I love the contrast between serious, job-oriented Fish and major screw-up Kyle. I love that there’s clear UST (Unresolved Sexual Tension) between them, and I can’t wait to see more. Plus, I’ve loved Brett Claywell since he played Tim on ONE TREE HILL.
Now, to the obligatory GL squee. Rafe’s reaction to Olivia and Natalia’s uber-chaste love affair was spot-on. His bewilderment at his religious mother purportedly going against everything she taught him was completely understandable. It wasn’t as simple as, “Ew! Mom! You’re gay?!” It was, “Are you still the woman who raised me?” And that’s a question he’s going to have to find the answer to in his own time, realizing that, yes, Natalia is still the woman of faith and virtue who taught him right from wrong. However, I did have to laugh at Frank slipping Rafe booze after all was said and done. I think one of my favorite parts of “Kamikaze GL,” (see Joe’s blog for the explanation of THAT) is that do-gooder Frank is turning into such a bitter, cranky rebel. It’s about time!

Soap Opera Weekly: Blogging With Mala
I’ve been a little behind with my soap hopping, so I haven’t tuned into AMC for a few weeks. But judging by the unhappy mail we get, it seems like watching the show is a cross between watching the live feed of an execution and getting a root canal. So, when I offered to pinch hit for our web site’s AMC daily recap today, I seriously questioned my sanity. I was like, “Dude, what am I setting myself up for?” Guess what? I loved the entire episode!
Expecting to see the “evil” Reese plastering herself all over Zach and “traitorous” Bianca waving her “spawn” at him in an effort to keep him from his beloved Kendall, what I saw instead was a Zach who was petrified by his wife’s fragile condition and struggling with his vulnerability. I saw a Reese who platonically kicked his mopey butt into Kendall’s room. And I saw a Bianca who was the St. Binks of the Holy Cross that I’ve always remembered. (Baby Gabrielle didn’t make an appearance at all.)
And guess what? There was other stuff on the show, too. (‘Cause if you go by e-mails and message board posts, you’d think the above storyline is the only thing on.) I didn’t realize that Pete was so darned cute. And Lucy Merriam’s Emma continues to be a total scene stealer. Brot, Taylor, Jake, Amanda, and JR all got a bit of face time to stir their issues around. Then there’s Aidan and Annie at Oak Haven…oh my goodness. Their “As The Air Vent Turns” bonding through the wall almost made me tear up. Yes, I’m that big of a sap. When I spoke to Aiden Turner during Super Soap last year, I remember he said he really liked playing Aidan a little bad, but honestly I love him good. Aidan Devane is an old fashioned soap hero and the few months where he was smacking Annie around and helping fake deaths were months I’m going to pretend didn’t happen. So this Aidan? The one who pressed his palm against the slats of the vent and urged Annie to visualize holding his hand…? Yeah, he’s a keeper!
Kinda makes me wonder, exactly what feed of AMC did I get? ‘Cause it’s sure not the one a lot of fans must be watching!
Maybe I just got lucky? LOL.
